Creative Writing Contest

Win a chance to be an LC State Creative Writing Student for a Day. Sponsored by LC State's BFA Program, Admissions, and Student Affairs

Who Can Submit?

  • High school students – any grade level

What Do I Submit?

  • 3 to 5 poems, or
  • One long piece of fiction or creative nonfiction (1,000 to 4,000 words), or
  • Two short pieces of fiction or creative nonfiction (250 to 1,000 words each), or
  • Novel excerpt (under 4,000 words), or
  • Short Play or Film Script (under 4,000 words)

How Do I Submit?

Starting November 1, 2024 all submissions will be done electronically online. 

When Do I Submit?   

Submissions will be accepted from November 1, 2024 to January 31, 2025.

Closed for submissions. Please check back on November 1, 2025 for next year's contest. If you are interested in studying creative writing, publishing, or professional writing at LC State, send an email to humanities@lcsc.edu for more information. 

What Do I Win?

  •  A “day in the life” of a Creative Writing student event at LC State on February 28, 2025
  • Participation in a series of fiction, poetry, playwriting, screenwriting, and/or creative nonfiction workshops with experienced, published LC State faculty
  • A session on the various types of jobs available for creative writing majors
  • A special tour of the LC State campus
  • Prizes! Prizes! Prizes!

What Else Should I Know?

  • Contest winners are responsible for transportation to and from the LC State campus.
  • LC State will offer special programming for parents/chaperones.
