Southern Poverty Law Center outreach director to speak at LCSC Center for Arts & History

Lecia Brooks, Director of Outreach for the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), will speak Thursday, October 17, at 7:00 p.m. at LCSC's Center for Arts & History as part of the Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate Speakers Series. Brooks' talk is titled "Southern Poverty Law Center: Fighting Hate, Teaching Tolerance, and Seeking Justice."
Brooks leads the Southern Poverty Law Center's outreach efforts on key initiatives and social justice issues. As outreach director, she frequently gives presentations around the country to promote tolerance and diversity. She also serves as Director of the Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery, Ala., an interpretive center designed to provide visitors to the Civil Rights Memorial with a deeper understanding of the civil rights movement.
Brooks joined the SPLC staff in 2004 as director of Mix It Up at Lunch Day, a SPLC Teaching Tolerance program designed to help break down racial, cultural, and social barriers in schools. Previously, she worked for 12 years in a number of capacities for the National Conference for Community and Justice in its Los Angeles office. Brooks is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University.
Brooks will be spending the earlier part of her day on the LCSC campus, speaking to classes in the Social Sciences Division.
Speaking Volumes: Transforming Hate Speakers Series is brought to the Center for Arts & History through sponsorships from: LCSC Continuing Education & Community Events; Shekirah Christian Community, and through grants from US Bancorp, Idaho Commission on the Arts, and National Endowment for the Arts.
The gallery is open Tuesday - Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Docent tours of the exhibit can be scheduled by calling the Gallery at 208.792.2243.
