LCSC Kids’ College sets summer classes; scholarships are available

LEWISTON, Idaho – Several new classes and an increase to more than $11,000 available for scholarships highlight the four sessions of Kids’ College at Lewis-Clark State College this summer.

Kids’ College, which is under Community Programs at LCSC, features four-day sessions of classes for youths ages 6-15. This year, the sessions will be June 26-29, July 10-13, July 24-27, and Aug. 7-10.

There are 75 class offerings available this summer, including 18 new classes. Most classes run for an hour and 45 minutes, but two classes run for a half day. The classes cover a variety of topics including archery, baking basics, jazz and hip hop, legos, face painting, rocket science, art media, gardening, geocaching, and yoga. New classes this summer will cover topics such as mini triathlon, event planning, hair braiding, origami, nail art, tie-dye and shoe painting, advanced cake decorating and more.

Catalogs were sent out to Lewis-Clark Valley elementary schools for the students to take home during  the week of May 15. The catalog contains information on the classes, registration form, scholarship application form, and a health waiver form.

Registration is currently open for all classes and there is a $5 savings per class for those who register prior to June 1.

Also this year, more scholarship money is available to cover the class fee for youths who qualify for free/reduced lunch through their school’s lunch program. Kids’ College received a $5,000 grant from US Bank, and the Idaho Future Fund more than doubled the grant request amount to the program as well. That means for the first time since Kids’ College returned to LCSC in 1998 that the program will have approximately $11,000 earmarked for scholarships, which allows students to take more than one class during a session.

Scholarship applicants will be asked to attach a copy of the free/reduced lunch award letter to their application. These letters are available at the school district office by request.

Instructors for the classes include LCSC staff and faculty as well as individuals from the region who have an expertise in the area that they will teach in.

Volunteers are also needed to help with the classes. A volunteer must be going into the 7th grade or higher. For more information on volunteering or to volunteer, contact the Kids’ College office at either kidscollege@lcsc.edu or call 208-792-2860.

Major and in-kind sponsors for the Kids’ College program includes Albertsons, P1FCU, Dentistry ‘4’ Kids, Christensen Orthodontics, Idaho Beverages, Cover Me Tees, the Lewiston Tribune, the LCSC tennis program, and the Associated Students of LCSC (ASLCSC). In all, Kids’ College secured more than $16,000 in grants and $5,000 in donations.
