Frequently Asked Questions

A radiologic technologist performs a variety of duties throughout a normal workday. The duties vary from providing patient care, performing diagnostic images, or assisting a radiologist with a special procedure. Rad tech work can span throughout a hospital or clinic. The daily duties may lead a tech into the Emergency Room, the Surgery Suite, the Intensive Care Unit, or to the normal X-ray room within the Radiology Department. Where ever an image is needed is where a tech may be found.

For an in-depth description, please review the information found at https://www.arrt.org

A Radiologist is a medical doctor specializing in interpretation of diagnostic images (requiring approximately 12 years of college, including medical school, and internship). LC State offers majors in pre-med if you are interested in this career path.

A Radiologic Technologist is the individual who performs the x-ray. Typically a rad-tech has graduated from approximately 3 years of college with an Associate or Bachelor degree and passed the National Registry exam provided by the ARRT®.

Currently, the answer is both "Yes" and "No." In order to become a Sonographer (or Ultrasound Tech,) you must complete a sonography program. We do not offer a sonography focused program...yet.

However, if this is your career goal, we recommend you first complete our Radiographic Science program, allowing you to earn an R.T. credential and have the knowledge and capability to perform a wide variety of imaging procedures before moving on to ultrasound. You will be much more competitive in the job market with each modality you learn.
