Meet The Team
Lewis-Clark State College sponsors both men's and women's intercollegiate tennis programs. It originated as a club sport in 1976 under Mike Whitney (Coach). In 1979, it attained official varsity sport status under Coach Rich Hills for one year until he left to coach at Point Loma Nazarene. From 1980-83, the coaching duties were handled by the players Sunny Jones, Brian Loomis and Ken Azbill.
In 1985, the women's team was discontinued. Bob Wehde took the helm of the men's program. The women's program was reinstated in 1988 with Kai Fong as coach.
Bob took the position of Elementary School Principal at St. Stanislaus in the Fall of 1989. Kai was assigned the men's team responsibilities.
Assistant coordinators/coaches since 1988 included Herman Johnson (1990-1992), Jeanne Helbling (1992-2020) and Ryan LaPlante (2021-2024).
The teams is affiliated with the NAIA. District 1 from (1980-1995). Region 1 from (1995-2006). Unaffiliated from 2006-2016. Associate members of the Golden State Athletic Conference from 2016-2018.
Unaffiliated Grouping members 2019-2021.
2022-2024 the women joined the Red River Athletic Conference while the men remained unaffiliated.
2025 - to be determined.
Since the teams' inception, players have originated from over 55 countries (American Samoa, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, Bhutan, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burundi, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ethiopia, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Maldives, Mexico, Mongolia, Namibia, Nepal, the Netherlands, New Caledonia, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, United States of America, Uruguay, Venezuela, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) and 11 US states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming).
