LC State Earns Designation as a Military Friendly School

Lewis-Clark State College earns designation as Military Friendly.

Lewiston, Idaho- Lewis-Clark State College has been designated as a Military Friendly School by Military Friendly, an organization that works to create better outcomes for veterans and current members of the United States Armed Forces.

Military Friendly surveys higher education institutions and puts out a rating based on criteria on how these institutions help veterans and military students. It is the longest running and most comprehensive review of college and university investments in serving military and veteran students.

Schools are rate on military student support and retention (30 percent), graduation and career outcomes (30 percent), financial aid and loan repayment (12 percent), culture and commitment (10 percent), academic policies and compliance (9 percent) and admissions and orientation (9 percent). The schools are judged in the categories by EY, a global leader in assurance, tax, transactions, and advisory services. A total of 1,693 schools were evaluated.

The rank for LC State means the college is in good standing with veterans or active military personnel who are seeking post-secondary opportunities. The college has an Office of Veterans' Services and works mostly with veterans in utilizing their GI Bill benefits at both the Lewiston campus and at LC State-Coeur d'Alene. The office also serves veterans' spouses and dependents using Dependent Education Assistance benefits. The college has students who are in active duty as well as National Guardsman, who are utilizing tuition assistance and the State Educational Assistance Program.

Patrick O'Shaughnessy, coordinator of Veterans' Services at LC State, says his office helps students request their Joint Service Transcript or Air Force Service Transcript so that the registrar's office can examine any military schooling and training to see if there is anything that can be transferred towards college credits. 

The college also participates in the Principles of Excellence, 8 Keys to Veterans' Success and Yellow Ribbon Programs.

LC State has a Veterans' Resource Center where students can study, use the computer, and use the printer for free.
