Minors

The Early Childhood Special Education minor prepares you to work with young children, with special and individual needs, in early childhood settings. This program prepares generalists, not specialists, in any one area. If you're interested in this minor, you will need to integrate the special education courses into your program and complete a 6 credit internship. Courses should be taken in order listed. This minor does not lead to K-12 Special Education endorsement.

The K-12 Literacy Endorsement is recognized by the State of Idaho as authorization to teach reading at any grade level, K-12. Completion of this endorsement, at an approved teacher education program, enables you to perform the duties of a reading teacher at K-12 levels, and to act as a reading resource teacher and consultant on reading improvement in your own building.  This endorsement is, also, a valuable addition to all teaching majors at both the elementary and secondary levels, helping you to learn to deal more effectively with problem readers in your own classrooms, as well as to encourage reading development and enrichment among all students. A strength of the program is the inclusion of supervised practicums, which allows opportunities to work with a wide variety of readers.

The Praxis II exam required for a Literacy endorsement is #5206 - Teaching Reading K-12.

This minor is only available to Teacher Education majors. If you are seeking a Mathematics – Middle Level (Grades 5-9) endorsement, you must take coursework in Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry in accordance with State of Idaho certification requirements.

You must pass the Praxis II exam #5164 - Middle School Mathematics.

This minor is only available to Teacher Education majors. If you're seeking Idaho’s Science – Middle Level (Grades 5-9) endorsement with your elementary or secondary certification, you must take coursework in Biology, Earth Science, and Physical Science that include lab components.

You must also pass the Praxis II exam #5442: Middle School Science.

This minor is only available to Teacher Education majors. If you're seeking Idaho’s Social Studies – Middle Level (Grades 5-9) endorsement with your elementary or secondary certification, you must take coursework in History, Geography, American Government, and Political Science or Economics.

You must pass the Praxis II exam #5089: Middle School Social Studies.

The Special Education Program prepares you to receive a State of Idaho Exceptional Child Certificate with a generalist endorsement.  This certificate enables a you, as a special education teacher, to work with students with special and individual needs in all grades, K-12. It allows you to work in a resource program or through inclusion in a regular classroom.  You must integrate the special education courses and internship into your elementary or secondary teacher program to complete certification.  Courses should be taken in the order listed.
