Military Scholarship Applicants
We are proud to support your education through the Army and Navy's Medical Enlisted Commissioning Program (AECP/MECP) and the Air Force's Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program (NECP). We consistently have 1st time NCLEX-RN pass rates above 90% and our tuition is far below the maximum $15,000 per year.
A letter of provisional admission may be granted to those who are presently serving in the U.S. military, who wish to apply for one of the programs from their military branch for the purpose of pursuing a BSN nursing degree, and who meet certain criteria listed for the program. The process takes a great deal of time and patience to pull everything together. Allow 3 months prior to seeking approvals, particularly if you are stationed where college records are not easily accessed.
As of 4/5/24: Provisional Admission Letters can only given to military applicants with an admission score of 60 or above. Selection Criteria and the point breakdown are listed on our website. Low-scoring candidates will not be able to receive a provisional admission letter.
Requirements that are specific to our program:
- Oral Communications (Intro/Fundamentals, Small Group, or Public Speaking) - can be waived for students with a previous BA/BS.
- Research Writing - usually a 2nd-semester English writing course equivalent to ENGL 102. Can be waived for students with previous BA/BS. Students with previous AA/AS degrees may possibly be able to waive this. Speak with an advisor.
- Nutrition (Principles of life span nutrition. Includes study of nutritional needs during exercise and the influence social, economic, and ethnic factors play in dietary habits and attitudes.)
- Certification as a Nursing Assistant/Nurse Aide (any state)
- Acceptable substitutions include Medic/Corpsman or Practical/Vocational Nurse Licensure
Before requesting a letter, applicants must have at least 3 of the 5 following classes completed with no less than a C and a 2.75 cumulative GPA for those completed:
- Chemistry + lab (General or Intro Chem is acceptable)
- Microbiology + lab
- Anatomy & Physiology I (or 1 semester of Anatomy)
- Anatomy & Physiology II (or 1 semester of Physiology)
- Statistics
The remaining pre-reqs can be in-progress but must be finished before starting nursing courses:
- Idaho General Education Core (may be taken over summers before graduation if necessary.)
Step 1: Apply to LC State (free application)
Step 2: Email all college/university transcripts (unofficial) to admissions@lcsc.edu
Step 3: Once you have been tentatively admitted, a Transfer Equivalency Report (TRER) will be prepared by the Registrar. Please contact Tiffany Pilon (tbpilon@lcsc.edu, 208-792-2087) to review your TRER for admission requirements to the BSN.
Step 4: Once your eligibility has been confirmed, prepare a portfolio containing:
- BSN Application - Download PDF
- A letter to the Chair of the Nursing and Health Sciences division (Michelle Pearson-Smith) requesting Provisional Admission status. (View sample letter) The cover letter must include:
- The semester and year of expected start in the nursing program must be included.
- The date of applying to the military program.
- Any coursework that will be completed that is not on college transcripts.
- Contact information
- If you have not had equivalencies evaluated, please include course descriptions/syllabi from the colleges where the following courses were taken: Anatomy & Physiology, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Statistics.
You will email this portfolio to Tiffany Pilon (tbpilon@lcsc.edu), Advising, Admission & Progression (AAP) Subcommittee Co-Chair, no less than two academic months prior to the date in which the letter of the provisional admission is needed (school holiday time is not included). Students who request a letter less than two months from when they need it risk the chance of not having it in time. It is your responsibility to start this process well in advance. Urgent requests will not be considered.
Formal application on NursingCAS.org will be required once you plan to attend. Official transcripts are required to be sent to NursingCAS and an application fee will apply.
For Fall entrance: Apply between Nov 1 - Feb 25
For Spring entrance: Apply between April 1 - Sept 25
The applicant will:
- Be currently enlisted in one of the branches of the U.S. military and have a reasonable expectation of being awarded one of their programs for military commissioning for nursing.
- Have read the information on the LC State Nursing Pre-Licensure BSN track website so as to understand prerequisite courses and overall responsibilities when applying to the Pre-Licensure track.
- Have successfully completed a minimum of 3 of the 5 courses:
- Chemistry + lab
- Anatomy and Physiology series + lab (colleges have different sequences of courses that cover A&P content; that series is counted as two courses)
- Microbiology
- Statistics
- Meet GPA requirements at the time of application:
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5 from all colleges/universities attended
- GPA of 2.75 combined from the courses listed above. (Most recent attempt if taken more than once)
- If not working as a Medic, Corpsman, or LPN/LVN, you must be able to obtain certification as a Nursing Assistant (CNA), or pass the CNA Challenge Exam offered by LC State's Workforce Training (available for M.A. and EMT/Paramedics). This requirement can be in-progress at the time of application but must be completed for full admission into the program. (July 17 for Fall starts, Dec 17 for Spring starts.)
- Medics/corpsmen will be given a form by NHS Program Advisor to have a supervising RN attest to the applicant's CNA skills in lieu of formal NA certification.
REMINDER: Pathophysiology not required after Spring 2024 entrance.
BSN students are admitted twice per year (Spring/Fall) and begin the course of study the following semester. Coursework plan options can be viewed below:
21-24 Month Plan (assumes all pre-req courses are completed before coming to LC State)
- 21 months--Must apply separately to the BSN by Feb. 25th for Fall semester entrance
- 24 months- Must apply separately to BSN by Sept. 25th for Spring semester entrance
33 Month Plan (includes 12 months of prerequisite classes starting Fall semester, then formally applying to BSN the following February)
The choice to start the BSN basic track in either the Fall semester or Spring semester will affect the length of time needed to fulfill course requirements. This is due to the summer months which are typically “counted” as a part of the military scholarship program.
There are no summer courses offered for nursing. Once you are in nursing coursework you may choose to take other courses during the summer depending on the requirements of your military scholarship program.
LC State does not have an ROTC; however, the University of Idaho and Washington State University both have ROTC programs. Students who are required to continue military contact while completing their bachelor’s degree in nursing use the resources at these campuses.
This is a rural area for education. These colleges are located approximately 40 miles from the LC State campus. Commuting between these facilities is common. You are responsible to arrange for ROTC responsibilities and coordinate them to meet the expectations of the nursing program.
Students with English as their second language must meet minimum proficiency standards to apply to the Pre-Licensure BSN track. Please see our English Language Proficiency webpage for more information.
